Balancing my professional career, personal life, and the responsibilities of being a Head Volleyball Coach has been a journey of growth, especially in honing my time management skills. My typical week involved meticulously planning six hours of diverse activities, including fitness and volleyball technique drills, as well as match time. The challenge wasn't just in the planning but in execution too. Engaging dozens of players in each session required me to strike a delicate balance — ensuring the sessions were both enjoyable and technically enriching, avoiding the pitfalls of tedium.
One of the most transformative aspects of this role was the development of my public speaking skills. Initially, addressing a large group didn't come naturally to me, but I saw this role as an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and embrace this challenge head-on. Now, I can confidently say that I've mastered the art of engaging a large audience, delivering instructions and feedback with clarity and impact.
My responsibilities extended beyond the court. There were instances when other club members were unable to fulfill their duties, and I stepped up to ensure the smooth running of our volleyball club. Recognizing that our members' satisfaction was paramount — as they invest not just money, but also their time and trust in us — I made it a priority to ensure everyone's experience was positive and fulfilling.
This coaching role has been immensely rewarding, not only in terms of the impact I made on the team but also in the personal skills I have developed. Chief among these is a newfound confidence that pervaded all aspects of my role, from decision-making to problem-solving. Public speaking, once a daunting task, has now become a strength. The rigorous demands of time management taught me how to prioritise and optimise every moment. Stepping in to cover for others improved my adaptability and leadership skills, enabling me to keep the club functioning smoothly under any circumstance. Additionally, this role significantly contributed to my own physical fitness, as I led by example, participating in drills and embodying the healthy lifestyle we promoted. These skills, learned on and off the court, have not only made me a better coach but have also enriched my personal and professional life in ways I never anticipated.
